The primary level of chemistry includes five Master's degree programs: inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, fine synthetic chemistry and molecular engineering. In 2006, the chemistry discipline began to award Ph.D. It was ranked in the top 1‰ in the world ESI ranking in 2010 and selected as the national "Double First-Class" building discipline and the "Second-Class Peak" discipline of Shanghai in 2017. In 2020, the chemistry discipline entered the top 0.3‰ all over the world in ESI ranking. The Chemistry Discipline comprises a faculty with strong expertise, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, foreign academician of the European Academy of Sciences, academician of Royal Irish Academy, and tens of winners/candidates of national talent programs. The Chemistry Discipline also has over ten national, provincial and ministerial teaching and research bases (e.g., Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials, Frontier Science Center of Materials Biology and Dynamic Chemistry), which provides essential support for high-quality talents cultivation, high-level scientific research. Based on the fruitful scientific research, tens of awards have been granted, such as the National Natural Science Award (Second Prize) and Shanghai Natural Science Award (First Prize). Some graduates will continue for the Ph.D. program, and others will work in institutions of higher learning, large and medium-sized enterprises, scientific research institutions and so on.
The discipline aims at fostering students' ability in keeping abreast of the advancements in chemical and physical processes in all types of processing industries (chemical industry in particular), in meeting the modern chemical industry's needs for top chemical engineering talents. The graduates are expected to possess the fundamental theories and systematic professional knowledge, the spirit of innovation and teamwork, and the ability to excel at development, education, and management in the modern chemical industries and some other related fields.
The program duration for master’s students is 3 years, with a maximum extension of 5 years. Course credits remain valid for 5 years from the date of enrollment.
