The Bioengineering Discipline of East China University of Science and Technology was originated from the first domestically established major of antibiotic manufacturing engineering in 1955. It was approved as a key discipline in Shanghai in 2000, as a national characteristic major in 2008, and the first domestic first-level doctoral program in bioengineering in China in 2015, and in 2019, the major of bioengineering was selected into the first-class undergraduate construction plan of the Ministry of Education. This discipline relies on national, provincial and ministerial research bases such as the State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering, the National Engineering Research Center for Biotechnology (Shanghai), and the province-ministry co-constructed collaborative innovation center of biomanufacturing industry, with an outstanding mentor team of Yangtze River scholars, National Outstanding Youth, Leading Talents of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 863 Field (Subject) Experts, 973 Chief Scientist, National Excellent Youth, Young Yangtze River scholars, including 38 professors and 55 associate professors. This discipline adheres to four aspects, focuses on key scientific issues in the field of bioengineering, carries out innovative research on the entire chain from basic to application, achieves breakthroughs in major key technologies in the field of bioengineering, and serves the high-quality development of the biomanufacturing industry. This discipline has distinctive features, excellent scientific research conditions and teaching resources, and fruitful scientific research, and has a significant influence at home and abroad. After more than sixty years of pioneering and enterprising, this discipline has formed five advantageous research fields: Synthesis and System Bioengineering, Cell Detection and Regulation Engineering, Biocatalysis and Conversion Engineering, Cell Culture and Tissue Engineering, Applied Biotechnology and Product Engineering.
